Scientific guide
The Scientific Calculator handles complex mathematical expressions using BODMAS. It supports trigonometry (including inverse and hyperbolic), logarithms, powers, roots, factorials, and a full memory register. You can type directly on your keyboard or click the on-screen keypad.
Worked examples
Evaluate a complex BODMAS expression
- Type (2 + 3) × 4^2 into the display.
- Press Enter or click the = key.
Result: (2 + 3) × 4^2 = 80
Parentheses are evaluated first (2+3=5), followed by the exponent (4²=16), and finally the multiplication (5 × 16 = 80).
Calculate a trigonometric value in Degrees
- Ensure the mode is set to DEG (default).
- Type sin(30).
- Press Enter.
Result: sin(30°) = 0.5
The calculator interprets 30 as degrees because DEG mode is active. If you switched to RAD mode, 30 would be interpreted as radians.
Chain calculations using the Ans key
- Calculate 5 × 5 = 25.
- Type Ans × 2.
- Press Enter.
Result: Ans × 2 = 50
Ans recalls the previous result (25), allowing you to quickly continue a multi-step calculation.
Tips
- •Press Esc or Delete to clear the entire calculator and reset to 0.
- •Use the 2nd and HYP toggles to access inverse (asin, acos, atan) and hyperbolic (sinh, cosh, tanh) functions.
- •Note: The % key divides by 100. So 50 + 10% evaluates to 50.1, not 55.
Frequently asked questions
What does BODMAS mean?
It is the standard order of operations: Brackets (Parentheses), Orders (Exponents), Division and Multiplication (left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (left to right).
What is the difference between DEG, RAD, and GRAD?
They are units for measuring angles. DEG uses degrees (90 = quarter circle), RAD uses radians (π/2 = quarter circle), and GRAD uses gradians (100 = quarter circle).
Why is tan(90°) undefined?
Because tan(θ) = sin(θ)/cos(θ), and cos(90°) = 0. Since division by zero is impossible, tan(90°) is undefined.
Why does 50 + 10% give 50.1 instead of 55?
The % key simply divides the current number by 100. It does not mean "add 10% of 50". To do that, you must enter 50 + (50 × 0.10).
What is the Ans key?
Ans stores the result of the most recent calculation. It lets you chain operations without manually retyping the previous answer.
How do the memory keys (MS, MR, M+, M-) work?
MS stores the current display in memory. MR recalls it. M+ adds the current display to memory, and M- subtracts it. MC clears the memory entirely.
Why does 2^3^2 equal 512?
Exponentiation is right-associative. The calculator evaluates the top exponent first: 2^(3^2) = 2^9 = 512.
How do I calculate a factorial?
Enter a whole number and press the n! button, or type the ! symbol (e.g., 5!). The calculator supports factorials up to 170.
How do I use the nPr and nCr functions?
Enter the total number n, click nPr or nCr, then enter r. The calculator enforces the rule 0 ≤ r ≤ n.
Can I use my physical keyboard?
Yes. You can type numbers, operators, parentheses, and even function names like "sin", "cos", or "log". Press Enter to evaluate.
Why did I get a syntax error?
A syntax error means the expression is mathematically incomplete. Common causes include mismatched parentheses, two operators in a row (like 5 + × 2), or an empty function call.
What is the largest number the calculator can handle?
JavaScript uses double-precision floating-point numbers, which max out around 1.79 × 10^308. Results larger than this return "Infinity".
How do I calculate a cube root?
Use the ∛ button, or type ^(1/3). For example, 27^(1/3) = 3.
How do I calculate an inverse trigonometric function?
Toggle the "2nd" button. sin becomes asin, cos becomes acos, and tan becomes atan.
How do I calculate a hyperbolic function?
Toggle the "HYP" button. sin becomes sinh, cos becomes cosh, and tan becomes tanh.
What does the "mod" button do?
It calculates the remainder of a division. For example, 10 mod 3 = 1, because 3 goes into 10 three times with a remainder of 1.
Can I use scientific notation in my inputs?
Yes. You can type numbers like 1e3 (which equals 1000) or 2.5e-4 (which equals 0.00025).
How do I clear an error?
Press the C (Clear) or Esc key. If you only want to delete the last character, press DEL or Backspace.
