Average guide

The Average Calculator computes six statistical measures from a dataset: mean, median, mode, range, sum, and count. It accepts numbers separated by commas or spaces, making it easy to paste data from a spreadsheet or document.

Worked examples

Find the mean, median, and mode of a dataset

  1. Enter the numbers 2, 4, 7, 8, 8 into the input field.
  2. Click Calculate.
  3. Review the results across the summary cards.
Result: Mean: 5.8 | Median: 7 | Mode: 8

Mean = 29 ÷ 5 = 5.8. Median is the middle value when sorted (7). Mode is the most frequent number (8).

See how an outlier affects the mean vs. median

  1. Enter the dataset: 1, 2, 3, 4, 100.
  2. Click Calculate.
Result: Mean: 22 | Median: 3

The massive outlier (100) pulls the mean up to 22, but the median stays robust at 3. This is why median is often better for skewed data like income.

Find the range of a dataset

  1. Enter the numbers: 12, 15, 18, 22, 25.
  2. Click Calculate and look at the Range & Extrema card.
Result: Range: 13 (Min: 12, Max: 25)

The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values (25 − 12 = 13).

Tips

  • •You can mix commas and spaces (e.g., "2, 4 7, 8") and the tool will parse them correctly.
  • •Use the median when your data has extreme outliers.
  • •The mode is the only measure that works with categorical data (if represented as numbers).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the mathematical average (sum divided by count). The median is the exact middle value when the data is sorted. The median is much more reliable when the data contains extreme outliers.
What is the mode?
The mode is the number that appears most frequently in the dataset. A dataset can have one mode, multiple modes (bimodal/trimodal), or no mode at all if every number appears exactly once.
How is the range calculated?
The range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values. It gives a quick sense of how spread out the data is, but is highly sensitive to outliers.
What happens if my dataset has an even number of values?
The calculator finds the two middle numbers in the sorted list and averages them to find the median. For example, the median of 1, 2, 3, 4 is 2.5.
Can I calculate the average of negative numbers?
Yes. The calculator handles negative numbers and decimals perfectly.
What does it mean if there is "No mode"?
If every number in the dataset appears exactly the same number of times (usually once), there is no mode because no single value is the most frequent.
What is a bimodal dataset?
A dataset with two distinct modes. For example, in the set 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, both 1 and 2 are modes.
Is the average affected by zero?
Yes. If you include 0 in your dataset, it counts as a value. It will lower the mean but may not affect the median or mode.
How do I know which measure to use?
Use the mean for symmetrical data without outliers. Use the median for skewed data (like house prices). Use the mode when looking for the most common item.
What is the difference between range and standard deviation?
Range only looks at the two extreme values (max and min). Standard deviation looks at how far every single data point is from the mean, making it a much more reliable measure of spread.
How many numbers can I enter at once?
You can enter as many numbers as you like, but performance and readability are best with datasets under a few hundred numbers.
Can I use this for grades?
Absolutely. Enter your scores separated by commas to instantly see your average, median, and highest/lowest scores.
Does the calculator round the results?
The mean and median are rounded to 4 decimal places. Exact sums and counts are displayed as integers.
What is the sum and count?
The sum is the total of all numbers added together. The count is simply how many numbers you entered.
Why is the median sometimes a decimal?
When there is an even count of numbers, the median is the average of the two central numbers. If those numbers are 2 and 3, the median is 2.5.
Can I paste data from Excel?
Yes. If Excel gives you a column of numbers separated by line breaks or tabs, you can usually paste them directly into the input field.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, all MathTools calculators are completely free and require no account.
Does the tool save my data?
No. Guest data stays in your browser. If you sign in, your recent calculations are saved securely to your account history.
